A few weeks ago I stumbled across a building that caught my eye while running errands. The words on the front of the place are what drew my attention “Black In America”. I had no idea what it was exactly but as an artist myself and creative I knew I had to find out. I researched and learned that it’s an art gallery that features various mediums of work by black artists all over the country. I was so excited to see it I planned my visit right away.

Entry to the gallery was free. I went on a weekday early in the day and to my surprise I was the only one there at the time. As soon as you arrive in the parking lot there’s a huge beautiful mural on the side of the buildings wall. I had to take some time to fully take it in.

As soon as I entered my eyes were immediately met with walls filled with artwork featuring beautiful hues of melanated skin. I was in awe. I didn’t know what to look at first. As I navigated myself down the front room I was greeted by a man whom I’d later learn was Najee Dorsey, the founder. He welcomed me in, asked what brought me here, I asked if I could take photos and he said of course. Then I started my exploration of beauty.

The gallery is very intimate in size which I love because it gives you an up close and personable experience. They have one large room where the majority of art is displayed then a few smaller rooms with additional pieces. There’s also a store where you can purchase merchandise and a full outside garden area with even more art.

These were some of my favorite pieces. The details are incredible. Mixed media on canvas by artist April Harrison.

The garden in the back was a whole separate exhibit in itself. The pieces were so unique and incorporated with all of the elements of nature. I could’ve stayed out there all day. There’s a patio area and several sitting areas, it was such a beautiful day outside too.

The venue also hosts various art themed events where you can socialize, meet artists etc. I will definitely be back. What a gem this was to find and especially in Southwest Atlanta. Only a few miles from home and located in the center of the historic East Point neighborhood. Of course I never leave a small black business empty handed. I purchased a t-shirt and some earrings from the store to support. If you haven’t visited I encourage you to do so. It’s the first all black art museum I’ve been to in Atlanta. What a delightful discovery.
